What is Hawaii Adventure Academy?

Hawaii Adventure Academy offers full-day, outdoor educational adventures for kids ages 11–18 on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our programs are designed to be fun, engaging, and growth-oriented — blending hands-on exploration with opportunities for personal reflection, teamwork, and learning about the natural and cultural richness of Hawaii.

Our programs are perfect for visiting families who want their children to have a unique, educational experience while in Hawaii, as well as for local families looking to get their kids outdoors and inspired. We work with kids ages 10–18 and create a welcoming, supportive environment for a variety of personalities and interests.

Each day is a little different, but adventures may include hiking, swimming, exploring lava tubes, visiting culturally significant sites, engaging in team challenges, nature journaling, and more. All our adventures follow a modified version of the Hero’s Journey — encouraging kids to see themselves as capable explorers, learning not only about Hawaii but about themselves.

The Hero’s Journey is a universal story pattern where the hero steps out of their normal life, faces challenges, and returns transformed. We use this framework in our adventures to help kids step out of their comfort zones, face challenges, and discover new strengths. It’s more than just learning about the Big Island— it’s learning about themselves, building confidence, and having fun along the way.

Yes! Safety is our top priority. All adventures are led by experienced educators trained in CPR and first aid, and we keep group sizes small for personalized attention. We also carefully assess locations for age-appropriate access and safety.

After booking, you’ll receive a detailed packing list. Typically, kids should bring a reusable water bottle, lunch, sturdy shoes, sun protection, and a curious mind! We provide all materials for learning activities.

Each adventure is different! Some are relaxed and accessible to most students, while others require a higher level of physical ability and are limited to older participants. We encourage parents to read the adventure descriptions carefully to ensure the right fit for their child. If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out.

Our adventures aren’t just tours — they are learning experiences designed with intention. While we visit amazing places around the island, our focus is on curiosity, knowledge building, connection, and personal growth. Students don’t just observe; they engage — through exploration, creative challenges, group reflection, and skill-building. Guided by the framework of the hero’s journey, each adventure encourages kids to discover new things about the world and themselves. It’s not about sightseeing — it’s about transformation.
